Of all the individual awards handed out at the conclusion of the season, Player Rater is best placed to predict the outcome of the best and fairest, because like the B&F format, the Player Rater system rewards consistency across a season.

Below are the predicted standings for each clubs Best and Fairest award.

Players that played less than 15 games, have been excluded. They include: Daniel Kerr, Heath Shaw, David Mundy and Barry Hall.

Notes:

  • Carlton are the only team that had all of their top 5 rated players play 22 games this season. Richmond were the next best.
  • Nick Dal Santo is a clear favourite for the St Kilda B&F. Riewoldt will likely finish outside the top 5.
  • Port Adelaide was the only team without a player rated over 7 for the season.
  • 3 of Fremantle’s top 5 rated players played less than 14 games (Barlow, Mundy and Sandilands).
  • The top 5 players for both Collingwood and Geelong finished in the top 30 overall.
  • Gary Ablett and Trent Cotchin have already been awarded their respective clubs B&F (Cotchin finished 2nd to Martin by .01 on Player Rater).

Selection in the Player Rater Team of the Season is based on player ratings - collected throughout the 2011 season. For the most part players have been selected in their preferred positions, the downside to this system is that highly rated players miss out on selection. Marc Murphy and Matthew Boyd (Ranked 7th and 8th overall) have missed selection in favour of true wingmen and half forwards.

The interchange has been selected by position, Mumford takes the role of back up ruckman, Mitchell - midfield, Scotland - defence, and Embley is included as the utility.

Club totals:

  • 5 players: Collingwood
  • 3 Players: Hawthorn, West Coast, Geelong (plus coach Chris Scott)
  • 2 Players: St Kilda, Carlton, Sydney
  • 1 Player: Fremantle, Gold Coast

Some say Murphy, some say Mitchell, some say Judd. Who was the footballer of the year for 2011? To find the answer, we’ve bought together the results of 3 major media awards - The Age Football of the Year, ABC Footballer of the Year and the Herald Sun Player of the Year.

The 3 awards and their voting structure:

Age journalists vote for their 5 best on ground. A total of 5 players receive votes, but the journalist can decide how many votes each of the top 5 receive. The maximum number of votes a player can receive is 10.

ABC commentators vote for their 3 best on ground. 3 votes for best on ground. 1 vote for the 3rd best on ground.

Herald Sun journalists vote for their 5 best on ground. 5 votes for best of ground. 1 vote for the 5th best on ground.

Earlier in the year we also included the AFLCA votes, but they can’t be included here because votes for the final 4 rounds of the AFLCA award are cast ‘in house,’ with the winner announced on September 27. Click here to see the results up to Round 19.

The contenders:

Marc Murphy: Joint winner of The Age Footballer of the Year and leading the AFLCA award.
Sam Mitchell: Won the Herald Sun Player of the Year and the ABC Footballer of the Year.
Chris Judd: Outright favourite for the Brownlow and second in the Herald Sun award.
Dane Swan: Second in the ABC award and fourth in both The Age and Herald Sun awards.

Scott Pendlebury: Third in the Herald Sun award and fourth in AFLCA award at the end of Round 20.

The Age ABC Herald Sun
105 - Marc Murphy
105 - Gary Ablett

19 - Marc Murphy
58 - Sam Mitchell
53 - Chris Judd
50 - Scott Pendlebury
49 - Dane Swan
46 - Marc Murphy

The voting parameters for each award vary slightly, so in order to aggregate the votes fairly, the total votes for each player in each award have been divided by the maximum number of votes available per game. For example: the maximum number of votes that can be awarded in the ABC award is 3 - so the total votes for each player in the ABC award are divided by 3.

By the system below, the footballer of the year for 2011 is... Sam Mitchell.

Every AFL news entity votes on and assesses performance in a slightly different way, but for the most part the same names make up the top two or three. To get an idea of which players have performed best in 2011, we’ve bought together a range of media perspectives.

An assigned journalist votes for their 5 best on ground. A total of 5 players receive votes, but the journalist can decide how many votes each of the top 5 receive. Typically the player judged best on ground receives 8 or 9 votes and the 5th best on ground receives 7. The maximum number of votes a player can receive is 10.

The ABC Grandstand commentary team votes for their 3 best on ground. 3 votes for best on ground. 1 vote for the 3rd best on ground. The maximum number of votes a player can receive is 3.

An assigned journalist votes for their 5 best on ground. 5 votes for best of ground. 1 vote for the 5th best on ground. The maximum number of votes a player can receive is 5.

Each coach votes for their 5 best on ground. 5 votes for best of ground. 1 vote for 5th best on ground. The votes of each coach are then added together. The maximum number of votes a player can receive is 10.

Barry Hall announced today that 2011 will be his final year in AFL. Hall will without doubt be remembered as one of the great key forwards of the modern era. But his misdemeanors won’t be forgotten. Hall will go down as one of the most physically devastating players to ever play the game.

In honour of Big Bad Bustling's great career, Player Rater present's Barry's YouTube timeline:

2001 - Hawthorn v St Kilda: Hall wins the game after the siren against the Hawks in what turned out to be his last kick for the Saints before moving to the Swans.

2004 - Port Adelaide v Sydney: Michael Wilson lays a great bump on Barry.

2005 - St Kilda v Sydney: Hall gets away with a cheeky one, jabbing Matt Maguire in the stomach, freeing himself up to take an open mark.

2006 - Sydney v West Coast: Hall breaks through two would be tacklers, but then gets clotheslined by Chris Judd. Quartermain’s commentary is priceless.

2007 - Barry Hall v Broadford: Barry fronts an ad for Ford. Barry Hall… helping grass roots footy grow.

2007 - Collingwood v Sydney: Late in the game, with his side losing, Hall dumps Heath Shaw in a tackle, but Shaw gets the last laugh…  “It’s over!”

2008 - Sydney v West Coast: Hall snaps, knocking out Eagles defender Brent Staker.

2008 - Sydney v West Coast: From the same game, Hall breaks the boundary line advertising board.

2008 - Rove Live: Rove thinks Barry’s “brain snap” might have been due to really cold Gatorade.

2008 - Sydney v Collingwood: After returning from suspension, Barry has another go, taking a swipe at Pies defender Shane Wakelin.

2009 - The Footy Show: Sam Newman's parody of Barry Hall for CGU.

2009 - Sydney v Adelaide (Seven News): Hall’s at it again, hitting Adelaide defender Ben Rutten.

2009 - AFL Game Day: Seven facts about Barry Hall. “Number 3: Barry Hall is so tough, sharks wear necklaces with his teeth on them.”

2010 - Bulldogs v Collingwood: Hall clips Sharrod Wellingham in a marking contest then takes to Leigh Brown and Harry O’Brien.

2010 - Collingwood v Bulldogs: Hall gives away 2 free kicks then Harry O’Brien gets stuck in and starts running his mouth. Youtube user goldensufer16 sums it up best… “if Hall was serious, harry o and several other collingwood players would be in the intensive care unit!”

2010 - Bulldogs v Hawthorn: Barry’s first goal for the Dogs!

2010 - North Melbourne v Bulldogs: After being continually aggravated, Hall finally loses it and gets Roos defender Scott Thompson in a sleeper hold, then takes on the rest of the team.

2010 - Bulldogs v Port Adelaide: Hall winds back the clock with a big pack mark.

2011 - Bulldogs v Gold Coast: The umpire helps Barry out, paying a 50 metre penalty, walking him to the goal square to kick his 700th career goal.

2011 - Bulldogs v Carlton: He’s still got it! Barry dribbles one home from the pocket.

Herald Sun writer Mark Robinson this week released his Round 14 All Australian Team. Earlier in the year we compared Robbo's Round 7 team with the Round 7 Player Rater team. So how do the teams compare after 14 rounds? The most obvious difference is that Robbo's team includes just one Geelong player, while the Player Rater team includes six.

B: Heath Shaw, Michael Jamison, Matthew Scarlett

HB: Heath Scotland, Sam Fisher, Brett Deledio

C: Scott Pendlebury, Sam Mitchell, Marc Murphy

HF: Andrew Walker, Travis Cloke, Nathan Fyfe

F: Jeff Garlett, Lance Franklin, Matthew Pavlich

Ruck: Dean Cox, Chris Judd, Gary Ablett

Interchange: Brent Moloney, Dale Thomas, Matthew Boyd, Daniel Wells (sub)

Click here for the original article

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B: Heath Shaw (7.19), Matthew Scarlett (7.23), Michael Jamison (7.01)

HB: Corey Enright (7.16), Harry Taylor (7.16), Nick Dal Santo (7.28)

C: Andrew Embley (7.32), Gary Ablett (7.73), Dale Thomas (7.33)

HF: Paul Chapman (7.26), Adam Goodes (7.24), Nathan Fyfe (7.31)

F: Josh Kennedy (7.16), Lance Franklin (7.71), Steve Johnson (7.34)

Ruck: Dean Cox (7.52) Sam Mitchell (7.79) Marc Murphy (7.75)

Interchange: Sam Fisher (7.04), Dane Swan (7.69), Matthew Pavlich (7.17), James Kelly (7.36) (sub)

Note: Underlined players only appear in one team.

Notable exclusions: Chris Judd (7.58) and Travis Cloke (7.09), ranked 7th and 43rd respectively.

Great midfielders are always going miss out, it's unavoidable. Judd misses due to a relatively poor month in June where he's was rated 7.0 or below in 3 out of 4 games.

Travis Cloke is currently ranked as the 9th best forward in the competition (5th among "key forwards"). Cloke's selection in Robbo's 22 may be the result of hitting form at the right time. Cloke has received a rating of over 8 in all of his last 3 games. In round 10 Cloke was ranked 130th overall, in round 14 he sits at 43.

To put into real stats, Cloke has averaged 5 goals and 8.6 marks a game in his last 3 games. In his 9 previous games this year he average 2.2 goals and 6.2 marks a game. Robbo might be a bit hot on Cloke right now.

Despite being ranked 10th overall, Cyril Rioli misses out on selection because he's only played 10 games. Scott Pendlebury (7.57) could have been selected on the wing, but I chose to select tradition wingman in Embley and Thomas. In most cases players have been selected in their preferred position. Nathan Fyfe may be the one exception.

The back line and forward line have been selected to include 3 key position players each. The bench includes one backman (Fisher), one midefielder (Swan), one forward (Pavlich) and one utility (Kelly).

Notable inclusions: Nick Dal Santo (7.28) and Steve Johnson (7.34), ranked 18th and 23rd respectively.

Players on teams with losing records typically get underrated, so Dal Santo's rating of 7.28 is probably a fair indication of his consistency this season. Dal Santo hasn't been rated below 6.25 all season.

Steve Johnson has failed to make it into both of Robbo's All Australian selections. Johnson gets into the Player Rater side ahead of Jeff Garlett (6.80) who is currently ranked 79th.

Johnson's Stats. Garlett's stats are in brackets.
Disp's: 23.2 (13.6), Marks: 6.7 (3.5), Goals: 1.7 (2.5), Tackles: 3.4 (4.2)

Players that dropped out: David Mundy, Scott Pendlebury, Brent Moloney, Cyril Rioli, Chris Judd, Jimmy Bartel, Aaron Sandilands and Robert Murphy.

Players that came in: Michael Jamison, Corey Enright, Gary Ablett, Marc Murphy, Josh Kennedy, Steve Johnson, Sam Fisher and Dale Thomas.

Herald Sun writer Mark Robinson yesterday released his All Australian team for the first 7 rounds of the season. So we thought we’d have a look at how his team compares with the Player Rater team.

For the most part the star names are the same, but there are some key differences. Interestingly the three most obvious differences involve Carlton players.

Note: In line with Robbo's selection, ratings from the St Kilda v Carlton game weren't factored in.

ROBBO'S TEAM:

B: Heath Shaw, Michael Jamison, Matthew Scarlett

HB: Heath Scotland, Dustin Fletcher, Brett Deledio

C: Scott Pendlebury, Jobe Watson, Andrew Embley

HF: Dustin Martin, Buddy Franklin, Stewart Crameri

F: Jeff Garlett, Jack Riewoldt, Adam Goodes

Ruck: Aaron Sandilands, Chris Judd, Dane Swan

Inter: Dean Cox, David Mundy, Sam Mitchell, Brent Moloney

Click here for the original article

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLAYER RATER TEAM:

B: Heath Shaw (7.4), Matthew Scarlett (7.4), James Kelly (7.3)

HB: David Mundy (7.6), Harry Taylor (7.0) Nick Dal Santo (7.4)

C: Scott Pendlebury (7.7), Dane Swan (7.7), Brent Moloney (7.5)

HF: Paul Chapman (7.4), Matthew Pavlich (7.6), Nathan Fyfe (7.3)

F: Cyril Rioli (7.9), Lance Franklin (7.5), Adam Goodes (7.2)

Ruck: Dean Cox (7.4), Chris Judd (7.9), Sam Mitchell (7.9)

Inter: Jimmy Bartel (7.7), Andrew Embley (7.5), Aaron Sandilands (7.4), Robert Murphy (7.2)

Note: Underlined players only appear in one team.

Defenders:

Michael Jamison (6.3) fell short of consideration for the PR team. A number of other key defenders including Chaplin, Rutten and Frawley were ahead in the pecking order.

Heath Scotland (6.6) was also some way off selection. In the eyes of Player Rater users Scotland's had a solid season without being spectacular.

The inclusion of Dustin Fletcher (6.9) in Robbo's team is understandable; realistically the backline would need an extra tall in place of Kelly or Dal Santo.

Nick Dal Santo's inclusion in the PR team will come as somewhat of a surprise, especially considering St Kilda's poor start. Dal Santo has rated above 6.7 in all of the 5 games he's played this season.

Midfield:

Midfielders tend to be the highest rated players on Player Rater, followed by forwards and then defenders. So a lot of highly rated players miss out due to competition. We've also tried to avoid naming midfielders out of position.

Highly rated players that didn't make the cut include: Jobe Watson (7.7), Matthew Boyd (7.6), Marc Murphy (7.6), Jude Bolton (7.6) and Matt Priddis (7.6).

Forwards:

Jack Riewoldt is the most notable omission from the PR team forward line. Riewoldt's a victim of the round by round rating system, had it not been for 2 poor games in round 2 and 3 he'd currently have a rating of 7.44 as opposed to his actual rating of 6.99. Player Rater rewards consistency and that's probably the one knock on Riewoldt at the moment.

It's fair to say that Jeff Garlett (6.3) has been underrated by Player Rater users. He too suffers from inconsistency, but also the fact that "pressure" doesn't always rate highly.

Cyril Rioli's absence from Robbo's team is an interesting one, and may have to do with the fact that he's only played 4 out of a possible 7 games. We couldn't leave him out though, in his 4 games this year he's averaged 20.5 possessions and 6 tackles and is the top rated player (7.93) through 7 rounds.

Ruck:

Cox, Sandilands and Mumford are the standout ruckmen in the league to this point. Sandilands is only slightly ahead of Mumford in the PR ratings so there's room for personal preference here. Hille and Jamar were the next closest.

According to the ratings of Player Rater users Dane Swan is set be the runaway 2010 Brownlow Medal winner.

If you convert the Player Rater ratings from each game this year into Brownlow style 3,2,1 votes*, the numbers have Dane Swan winning the count by 7 votes from Luke Hodge and Chris Judd. If Swan does go on to poll 32 votes, he'll equal the record held by St Kilda's Robert Harvey (1998).

At a glance the count appears high, but the numbers aren't unprecedented. In 2007 8 players polled 20 votes or more and last year Gary Ablett polled 30 votes from only 19 games played.

Swan played all 22 home and away games in 2010 and is expected to poll in up to 14. Swan's high numbers are expected to be reached on the back of a 10 game mid-season run of votes from round 11.

- Fremantle rookie, Michael Barlow will poll the most votes per game (1.54) and will lead the count after round 13.

- Despite missing the first 3 games of the season, Chris Judd will be at the top of the leaderboard after round 10.
